Easter

I don't love holidays (except maybe Halloween), but I feel obligated to celebrate them because I have children. Holidays do, at least, provide a theme for craft projects, and I do like craft projects. My favorite Easter craft this year: chicks in an egg carton.

Frank added his unique touch to his chicks. It's impossible to see in the picture, but the two at the back each have three eyes, and are called "Chick-Ons". And the front one is, of course, a cyclops.

Elise's chicks were more traditional. She actually did a really great job putting them together. I had to help a bit, of course, but she did a lot better than I had expected.

Saturday morning, I asked Frank if he wanted to go to an Easter egg hunt at a park. He said he did, so we headed over to the Bloomington park, where the Lions Club does an egg hunt every year. When we pulled into the parking lot, Frank went crazy, insisting that he did NOT want to hunt for eggs, but instead wanted to go to grandma's house. I wasn't about to fight about it, especially since it was raining, so we went to my mom's. I felt a bit bad about Elise though; she really wanted to go to the park. It was still a good 15 minutes until the hunt started, so I thought, why not take Elise and leave Frank at my mom's? Seemed like a great idea to me. I gave him one last chance to come with us, then Aaron and I took Elise. Here she is getting ready to go.

She loved it, and managed to collect five or six eggs.

When we got back to my mom's house, Frank was a bit upset, insisting that we left him without asking him if he wanted to go. We abandoned him, drama, drama, drama, we are terrible parents, we denied him an egg hunt, drama, drama, drama. I am still hoping that one day Frank will see a logical connection between his choices and the consequences, but clearly there is still a disjoint in his mind.

Despite the drama, Frank did not miss out on egg hunting completely. We also did an egg hunt at my parent's house. My mom had the totally brilliant idea of assigning an egg color to each kid, so that the older ones can't dominate. In fact, they end up helping each other. It seems to work well. Frank was assigned yellow eggs, and Elise was pink.

And finally, we decorated eggs. Probably more fun for the adults than it is for the kids. I mean, the kids like it, but really, do we need three dozen eggs for six kids? Probably not. For those of you who were not aware, Aaron takes his egg dying very seriously.

And that concludes this holiday. Please join us for the next one, April 16th, when we all breath a sigh of relief that tax season is over...

  2. I love your craft projects! Mostly for the cyclops and Chick Ones. Love it. And of course the obligatory drama of every holiday. *sigh* holidays really are a lot of work just so our kids can remember that we never let them do anything fun. :)
