more of the same

So I guess lately this blog has turned into the misadventures of returning to college, but what can I say?  It's sort of my focus lately.  Latest misadventure:  Babies in class.  I'm not kidding.  Last week a girl brought her three month old baby to class.  I assumed maybe she had a babysitting emergency or something.  I thought it was pretty brave of her to bring him, but he did sleep in his carseat the entire time, so no big deal I guess.  It was weird, but wasn't disruptive or anything.  We didn't have that class on Monday because of the holiday, and that class is only twice a week Monday and Wednesday.

So, this week on Wednesday she shows up with her baby again.  Seriously.  Only this time he didn't magically sleep the entire time.  He was at times very disruptive, and really his general presence even when he was quiet was disruptive.  At one point she was even at the back of the room, bouncing him or whatever.  Why does she not understand that this is not appropriate?  I don't get it...

But, this is the same girl who shows up each class period with a (large) bag of candy to share with her table.  She magnanimously offers to share with everyone, if we want to walk over to her table to get some.  It's a generous offer, to be sure.  Yesterday, the candy of choice was skittles.

I really really like the professor of the class, and I am hoping in my heart that her patience with this chic is wearing thin.  I think I might review a few DSC policies over the weekend to see if they have any particular rules about bringing children to class.  Just for fun.  They don't allow cell phones and texting in class.  How is a baby or a community bowl of candy any less disruptive?

  1. I had to take Akiko to class with me a couple times, but there were only two weeks left in the semester so, as a brand newborn, she just slept the entire time.

But I agree, by that age, she should find someone to watch the baby for the hour or two that you're all in class.
